Cupholders

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to put a cupholder or two and what style to use?

Probably not what you had in mind, but I use one of these on the floorboard just in front of the flap torque tube. It holds a drink on both sides and has some open storage space in the middle for phone, sunglasses, etc. The velcro straps wrap loosely around the flap tube. We only bring water bottles with a screw cap, and it’s easy to reach in the baggage area. If the cup holder form factor is important to you, put it in the front of the baggage area. Your cup goes behind the copilot side. I have a great pattern for an A model baggage area.

Edit:

Old baggage area thread. You have to click on the pictures for them to display.

I hadn’t seen your baggage area before. That’s pretty slick.

I would assume you could make something very similar, maybe identical for a B model. If you put your headsets there, wire them up to hang and plug in cross cockpit. Unless you can swivel your torso 180 degrees. Anything I want to get to in flight goes on Adam’s side. It’s an easy reach.

I think it would be really close to the same on the B model. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. Should you make and install one, definitely post it in the DIY thread for the B folks. Only one pound added! Weight is the enemy!

Agreed - especially aft. I’ve read somewhere that installing the Rotax 912ULS makes the Sonex a little light up front, but I won’t believe that 100% until I have it on scales, obviously.

This seems like a great way to have a spot to put a few light things and (probably more important) keep things from migrating to the back end of the tail cone inadvertently. Very well done!

I have a Sonex Model A (legacy) with dual stick. I ended up buying a cheapy plastic fold-down one with 3M adhesive strips (I didn’t want to drill into the tunnel to attach) and attached it on the forward side of the main spar tunnel right in front of the control stick and just below the top of the tunnel. In essence, it’s between my knees. So far, so good. I plan to attach another one on the co-pilot side.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

Based on my experience I think this is true as right now I would prefer my CG slightly forward. My 912is is a little heavier, but I also suspect the B model would be more nose heavy than the legacy. And I’m not sure what my nosewheel vs tailwheel does to it.

A carbon water bottle holder for a road bike. (Amazon - lots to choose from). Weighs an ounce.

I taped it to the front of the spar box with 30lb foam tape. Between legs and dead aft of the stick. Let the tape set up for 48 hours before using. Held a 20 oz bottle of water in 4G pulls fine.
