Wingtip lights

I purchsed LED wingtip lights with strobe and white position lights. With the wingtip design, the lights would be blocked from above. Has anyone come up with an alternative placement?

You’ll need to make a mount for the light that brings it out to where it’s not blocked. There are actually some on Thingiverse if you have a 3D printer and get lucky enough to have the same light. I’m using the Uavionix SkyBeacon and SkySensor so I had to make my own. Anyone who wants the .stl file can have it.

I did the same - link to the files is here:

What lights do you have?

Gauge Pods are another option but they may or may not work with your lights. I was going to use them but they didn’t fit my AeroLEDs Pulsar 660s so I went the 3D printed route.

I have the Aveo powerburst. I just noticed that a Sones wingtip mount if available! I’ll check into that or fabricate something. Thank you!!

John is scowling at us for putting lights on a Day VFR Sportplane, but my project came with them, so I whittled “shims” out of softwood to fix the beam pattern and painted them.

Welcome, Txairmale!. I made my skybeacon mount to extend about 2 in past the upper surface, out of fiberglas, riveted in, filled in with bondo, smoothed and painted. been working fine since 2017. 13BRV3 is exactly correct!

Some of us are burning up night VFR hours too!

I have the same lights. I designed and 3D printed some stand-offs that would have worked fine (depending on the filament - I suggest PETG or nylon).

And then I decided to try making 3D printed composite molds. They turned out pretty well.

Here’s a link to the project on my GitHub where you can grab the STL files to print your own:

It’s already been mentioned in the forum before, but here’s a link to my YouTube video covering the “forged” carbon fiber lay-up process for it:

I think you could just print the cavity and lay up a couple of layers of fiberglass/carbon fiber cloth without using the core to press-fit the material. It would certainly be lighter that way.

Thank you all very much. I’ll choose a solution from your suggestions!
