Training and Airworthiness certificate

so I’ve gotten myself in quite a pickle. I bought a fresh built sonex A without an airworthiness certificate. Reasoning was being able to do the maintenance. I wanted to use it to get my sport license. I have over 100 hours logged in a 1969 Grumman Yankee AA1 I used to own and was prepping for oral and checkride when I got Rocky Mountain spotted fever and was down hard over a year. Ended up selling the plane to pay bills and now want to get back into flying but can’t find a school/cfi ? Anyone know how I can get from A to B? I am in Lynchburg Virginia , the plane is in my driveway and wings are stored in a trailer. Don’t see since I’m paying to down or hanger for a plane just sitting.

Thanks

Greg

Greg,

When you say “without an airworthiess cert” do you mean that the airplane was build and never had it’s FAA EAB inspection/certification done?

Also, it’s unclear. Do you have your private (or other) license or are you still working on it?

Correct, I have all of the build logs , pictures etc and have reached out to the DAR for inspection but that kicks off when I apply for airworthiness.

I never got my private, passed the written, logged all of the requirements, hood, night, xcountry etc. and was prepping for the oral and check ride when I became ill.

I went down and took the plane apart and trailered it back to Virginia, it was sold to me as unfinished, which it is. Still needs a couple of little items finished and a couple of items corrected. Moving the throttle to center from left side, avionics programming, finishing the wiring and pitot to the wings for quick disconnect. Final cleanup debur and vacuum before inspection.

I’m sorry, no my written expired so I’ll have to take the sport pilot knowledge test. Then I think a flight review, brush up on anything rusty, do an xcountry and then I can solo, or just take the oral and checkride.?

Falwell Airport lists flight training.

You need that rating first, then you need some Sonex training. You are not going to be able to get training in your Sonex that hasn’t gotten through phase 1.

Yeah and I’ve spoken to Roger about it but you have to join their flying club and there’s a lot more to that than just getting your training. I’ve not found one facility around me that will just do sport pilot training.

I understand I’m not going to be able to fly off phase 1 until I get the rating, hence the catch 22 I’ve gotten myself into.
