Thanks For The Memory (Foam) - Seat Upgrade

After thirteen years of sitting on the 1" foam in the stock interior and enduring the discomfort when flying from a rough turf strip or bumpy skies I decided to upgrade the seating.

The original padding is standard foam and over the years it had lost all ability to cushion my bottom.

In an effort to cure the problem I found in a local “Big Lots” store a Serta 2" memory foam mattress topper for a reasonable price. Cutting and fitting was quick and easy and my tender parts are very thankful.

Sitting feels much better although I haven’t had an opportunity to fly it yet.

Yes it added a few ounces to the weight but … some things are worth it!

Dale, I flew my Sonex many times to Crossville with the Pink/Blue memory foam stack-up. I agree, comfortable seats are worth their weight in gold!

Great to hear from you young man! Hope you are doing well.

I flew this one to Crossville twice with the 1" stock padding (~ 3 hours each way) and it didn’t really bother me but now I’m getting older and I need a bit more comfort. You mentioned it and I’ve been considering adding a top piece of foam to the 2" memory foam in there now. I might go with the pink or just reuse the factory 1" piece.

I thought about adding a seat heater too …

P.S. Michael … if you decide to build the HiWing please send a builder’s link. I’ve really thought about it but so far I don’t know of anyone producing a Corvair engine mount.

If you really want to pamper yourself - go with three different durometers of memory foam.

I used 3” foam from JoAnn fabrics. So far it’s ok but Bill I’d be interested to know your source if I ever redo mine. I’ve also thought to make a set of 1” cushions in case I ever take a tall, skinny person in the airplane.

I bought my foam from https://wingsandwheels.com/confor-foam.html . The only downside to Confor foam is it’s weight. It’s also nice and firm in the cold weather until your butt warms it up!

Here were my old Sonex seats before covering..
