I got an estimated shipping date for my High Wing tail kit order this evening. Didn’t immediately jump on the HW bandwagon…I think I was in the 70-80 range on reservations. They are estimating a shipment date of 1/30/26. Will be interesting to see how much has changed since I built my Sonex A model (first flight was in 2008).
I built and flew Sonex #664. First flight 09/23/2006. The original Sonex was the genesis of the company. A lot of care went into developing those plans. I’ve never seen a better set of plans before or since. I hope the HW plans and parts lives up to that legacy. Should be a fine aircraft.

I received my notice as well. I will be picking mine up. I reserved on the first day they became available and my estimated date is 1/9/26. I was really hopeful for pre-Christmas, but I’m actually quite impressed they kept to the timeline they told us back in the Feb 2025 webinar pretty much spot on all year. I’m really looking forward to having something to work on during winter! My goal is to complete the tail kit before the next kit arrives.
I’m looking forward to tail kit reports.
Soon, really soon, not very soon, but soon…Been waiting 11 months and its almost time!
@ChrisAtwood is this your first build?
Aha! A member of the Indiana Sonex mafia!
You’re gonna love this.
Mark informed me last monday that they needed to push the tail kit deliveries back one week. I’ll be picking up the tail kit on 1/16/26 now.
Yes, it will be my first airplane build. Although, I’ve been helping build two different Zenith 650’s for the last year and I have been involved in maintaining airplanes I fly for about 20 years. I’ve been building plans-built wooden boats since 2009 and R/C planes since 1998. So plans reading isn’t new and I am excited to work with metal instead of dusty wood. So after 25 years of, dreaming, researching, planning, it appears the stars have finally aligned to finally build a kit plane. I feel fairly well prepared and having the Indiana Sonex Squadron nearby for help will be a great resource.
I have had a lot of Glen-L catalogs! Someday maybe.
Sonex wasn’t quite sure everything would be finished by close on friday 1/16. Sounds like some might start going out early this week. I’m going to pick mine up on 1/21/26.
As of today, tail kits are now shipping.
Great! I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s excited to see the pictures of you kit!
First impressions going through inventory of the High Wing tail kit…..
-It appears to me all the laser cut vertical spar, horizontal spar and rudder horn parts are PRE-BENT!!!
-No more paper sticker labels! Laser inked(?) directly on parts!
-Quality of the cutting, holes and edges look really nice!
-The plans are a lot less cluttered and appear easier to follow. More in the EAA build log in the coming days.
Cool to see you building already and that’s awesome that your son is pulling rivets. My son Adam was 12 when we started and he was involved right away. Took a little time to teach how to drill straight by hand, and how to safely use the drill press, but that investment really paid off. 10% for the airplane, 90% for the young man he has become. Keep that up! Also the hardest thing for me was to hold him to safe workmanship levels, and not to enforce my own level of insanity on him. Trust me on this! It works out.
