Onex #245

I’ll try to offer updates as I make them, but here’s the vital stats:

Onex kit #245. Standard kit with pre-assembled spars and machined angle kit. Kit delivered 3/18/25. Planning on using a Rotax 912 ULS for power. Also currently planning to build as a taildragger but will build tri gear components into the build in case I want to convert the gear in the future.

To date I have around 110 hours into the build:

  • vertical stab done minus tip
  • horizontal stab done minus tips
  • fuselage in canoe stage, aft fuselage done minus lower skin
  • aileron mixer ribs nearly done
  • finishing flaps currently

AirVenture this year will hopefully be a shopping run for EFIS and avionics, exterior lights, and a bunch of other stuff.

Looks great so far! Have you done this before?

From what little I can see that’s fine old F-250 in the garage too!

Dale

I had forgotten how much fun the building process is, Dale! Plus these new kits are a whole generation better with everything being formed and pilot holes drilled. It’s amazing!

The F250 is my late father in laws. He bought it when it was one year old and it’s been in the family ever since. 78K miles and all original!

I’ve considered building again. Getting to the age where I’ll need a high wing so I can get in & out of the thing.

I’m guessing the F-250 isn’t for sale either …

Mike, thanks for sharing. Your perspective as both an “old kit” and “new kit” builder are really interesting. That’s really cool that you’re getting experience across multiple kit generations.

Michael, what EFIS and Lights are you leaning toward?

Good question. My plan is to look at all those at AirVenture this summer, but at the moment I’m leaning towards either Grand Rapids Horizon EX or MGL MX2 (new, not out yet but soon). I used an MGL Xtreme in my Waiex and was happy with it but I really would like to have a PFD, engine gauges, and a map all in one screen.
As for lights, I used Aveo LED’s on the Waiex and loved them so may do the same, and probably AeroLED’s for landing lights. Either the Sunray EVO III or the Microsun, depending on which I like more when I see them.

So many decisions!!

Just a quick update on Onex #245, as I hit around 250 hours of build time, the fuselage is on the gear and fuselage controls are being installed. The elevator torque tubes are installed and I’m working on rudder cables. The seat is fabricated, engine mount on (tri gear weldment is included for a faster gear swap in the future), flap handle and brake handle done.

I was able to find a used Rotax 912 ULS that’s currently in for IRAN inspection, avionics mostly purchased, and prop&exhaust on order.

Making progress!

Just an update Chris, I went with GRT Sport EX EFIS and GRT EIS, MGL V16 comm radio, and I’m waiting on uAvionix to finish up and deliver their new echoESX with an AV-20 to control it. I’m also using AeroLED wingtip and landing lights

Looks great Mike!

I’m looking forward to seeing your instrument panel!! I built mine on the cheap but hope to upgrade someday.

Wes

I was just about to ask and you read my mind! I think that is a great choice for your Onex. Cool find on the engine too!
