I’ve got a buddy who has an older Revmaster motor in a Thatcher CX4. He dry fit his new bearings in the case without the crank, and after torquing down the main studs the bearing webs don’t sit flush. This is obviously bad. Looking for knowledge from the VW collective, any idea what bearings he should buy?
Hey Bryan,
I don’t quite understand how this would have happened? What caused the bearings not to sit flush in their saddles? Were the locating pins not lined up with the holes in the bearings. Sorry I can’t picture this.
As for bearings he can order them from any VW place. They are just standard 1600cc Beetle bearings same as in our Aerovee. Only caveat is for the Revmaster two full sets are needed due to two sets of splits required. I would go with Mahle or similar quality.
I ordered mine from CIP1. He’ll have to take note of the old bearings if they are standard or over size. Depends on if the crank is new or has been machined once or twice.
Rene’,
I didn’t understand it either, which is why I posted the question to the greater VW brain trust.
Is there any chance this would happen with type 4 bearings, or one of the other variants?
The Revmaster case is not much different than the Aerovee. The only way I can see this happening is if the locating pins are not lined up with the bearing holes. It did happen to me once and I screwed up a bearing. Since then I lay the bearings in the case 1/2 with the locating pins and make felt pen marks on the bearing where flush with case.
I don’t think you can use type 4 bearings.
