Neway valve seat cutting tools

Here’s an exhaust seat before.

There are 3 pilots - 7.98, 8.00, and 8.02 mm. They are tapered and you pick the one that fits best.

Then the cutter goes on the pilot. It has nifty carbide blades and there is a set for 30, 45, and 60 degrees. The yellow cutter in the picture has 30 on one side, and hidden in the picture is the 45 degree on the other side.

The little black T handle is basically a 1/2” nut driver, but a really deep one. After cutting a while, most of the seat cleans up, but one part doesn’t yet.

Because these seats are bad, I get impatient and use a deep 1/2” socket in a drill.

They all came out pretty good, but I can’t seem to do the 30 degree top cut because the seat pocket is too deep and the cutters hang up on the aluminum.

Very cool Bryan! To abide by “Cotton’s Law” I’m going to have to invest in this seat cutting tool. I’ve tried looking for this particular one, but can’t find them. Would you mind sharing the link where they can be purchased? How are the cutting blades standing up?

Thanks

Rene’,

Here’s a copy of the email from Jim at Neway. I ended up getting 3 pilots and so far have used the 7.98 and 8.00.

Hi Bryan.

I would be happy to give you a recommendation. This one’s easy.
CU234 Valve seat cutter, 38mm diameter, 30 degrees x 45 degrees $ 124.50

https://newaymfg.com/parts/CU234

CU205 Valve seat cutter, 38mm diameter, 60 deg. $ 73.75

https://newaymfg.com/parts/CU205

You will also need pilots. You didn’t give me a valve guide size, but I’m guessing that it’s 8mm. You would want two solid pilots. Why two? Read this:

If you are working with new valve guides, or “like new” guides, you would want the 8mm standard and the .001” smaller pilot (7.98mm). If you’re working with the existing guides (some wear, but still good), then you would want the 8mm and the .001” bigger (8.02mm). The pilots are $ 26.25 each.

You can give it a shot with just one pilot. You might get lucky. If not shipping the second one would cost you $7 or $8 postage. Here’s the rest:

TW505 T-wrench $ 10.25

CA160 Case $ 16.50

KACC246 Accessories kit $ 5.25

Total (assuming two pilots) $ 282.75

To purchase just give us a call with a credit card. We do not sell through our website. Also, FYI, we have a price increase – our first one in seven years – taking place on February 1.

I emailed Jim, he gave me the list, I emailed him what I wanted plus my name and shipping address then called him on the phone to give him credit card info.

One other bit of trivia, Jim’s father started the company way back when and one of his first big customers was VW. He went out to Germany to demonstrate the tools and they ended up specifying Neway cutters as the approved VW service tools. This was back during the aircooled days.

With cut seats, and new valves, lapping goes really quick.
