New Builder, Northern Illinois

Greetings, soon to be new builder of a Highwing. Anticipating getting tail kit to start this thing off in the next week or so. Certainly won’t be getting a rocket launch start at it like Chris A is, but excitedly looking forward to the process.

Based at C77 - Poplar Grove, IL… and adding to the Bryan with a “Y” population on this forum, who is also at C77 and we both actually work for the same big machine employer.

Currently care taker of a 1956 Piper Pacer (yes, I know in the FAA eyes its still a Tri-P, but the little wheel is back in the right place :smiley: ) and a 1975 Bowers Fly Baby.

Strong proponent of type club forums and the knowledge sharing of “been there done that” and how-to that comes with that. Invaluable in my mind. So, advance thanks to all and especially to Evan for setting this one up.

Best,

Bryan

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sonex!

Mr. Cotton seems to be OK but I’ve only witnessed him from a distance. :laughing:

Please link us and/or keep us up to date on your Highwing build. Not sure I’m up for building another plane but the HW is intriguing and would make a great airframe for a 3.0 Corvair conversion … :shushing_face:

Welcome aboard Bryan. I guess Mr. Cotton is Y-Bryan, and you are now High Bryan (based on your airplanes.)

Haha. “High Bryan” sounds like he’s been hanging out with Cheech and Chong.

What engine you planning on for the highwing? You doing with the standard or quick build?

I have a kit reservation too, soon to be full order, I’m planning on a quick build with the jabiru 3300.

@bsmith welcome to the forum!

I’m planning to do the kit build route. Think I’ll convert some of the cost delta into instrument options. As the proverbial saying goes, “this is not your father’s “kit” build”. They have advanced a lot to say the least!

If I was to buy an engine today, I would probably go with the UL350is. That said, I will be watching closely the Rotax install and performance at Sonex and install kit option that Casey at Cooper Aircraft is putting together. The Jabiru is not off the table yet either, and will also be watching what performance improvements Edge Performance can get with their EFI install that they have in early development stages.

I echo your engine thoughts ysifly2. It’s going to be a fun space to watch. I’m planning on the UL but nothing is off the table yet.
