New builder in Southern Illinois

Hi folks, Phill Hill here, builder of SNB0061.

Eagerly waiting the delivery of my kit, which should be ready to ship any day now.

Retired, now I have the time to do this.

Cool, just 220NM from here!

Phil: Did you give up racing cars?

Ron,

You are showing your age or your love for Formula 1, but I thought it funny!

Brian

Bryan:

When I started racing there was also another Hill, first name Graham.

Welcome Phil!

Welcome Phill!

Phil, exciting times.

You are ahead of me, I’m not retired…

I’m building SNB0060 in Pella IA just on 500 hours in, it’s a great kit, wishing I’d started several years ago. Also going with the Turbo Aerovee.

Looks good Derek, I like your wing hoists. KPEA is less than 200nm from me. Here’s a plug for you guys to advertise any local fly-ins in your area, as it would give us a fun place to go and meet other Sonex folks. We have an events section in the forum. Of course I’m not just saying this for the people within range of me, it’s a good way to connect the Sonex community in general.

Thanks Bryan,
I found the hoists on Amazon as canoe lifts. Max capacity 125lbs.

Thanks Dan,
I’m assuming you noticed that I’m using your concept of making the wing tip removable along with strobe lights mounted on 3D printed spacers out on the wing tip.

Thank you for all the great info shared in your videos, much appreciated.

I also need to find the thread about landing lights again and give credit to whom ever it was that shared their idea about Amazon LED lights stripped down to shed weight, I’m using those and mounting them in Duckworksav.com mounts.

I did see that we chose the same path, but I was just thinking “phew, maybe I didn’t choose such a bad path after all, since someone else is doing the same thing.” Haha. Hopefully I haven’t steered you in the wrong direction. Your wingtip ribs look like they fit much better than mine. I’m eventually going to need to add some filler of some kind to smooth out the a couple of spots near the leading edge.

I don’t plan to fly at night much (if at all), but I’ve been thinking about integrating landing lights into the main gear wheel pants. Or something very similar to what you did out near the wingtips. Yours look really nice.

I too don’t plan to fly much at night, so my lights are more about wanting to be seen. I also ride motorcycles and am a believer in having good lights, front and back as I’ve experienced the difference.

But now I feel bad, we have kinda highjacked Phil’s thread. Sorry Phil I hope this is at least of interest to you

OH, I don’t mind. I’m getting a fast-build kit in the next week or so. I’ve been spending some time reading the forum and browsing other builder logs. This will be my 2 plane project. The first was a KR2 started by someone else and as it turned out never felt the air blow through it’s feathers. The farther I got into it, the worse it became. Serious mistakes were made in the bones that made it impossible to correct. I thought I could correct it and probably could be it would have been easier to start from scratch. So I parted out what I could and eventually cut the rest up and spread its remains across many dumpsters in the area. I told my self I was not done and when I did this again it would be kit built brand new.

I’ve not seen any built logs of any fast-build kits yet. I figure at my age, I’m 68, I would try to reduce the build time as much as possible. I hope I chose well.
