New Aircraft Builder, Making a Onex!

Evening, all! New, first time aircraft builder, 26 years old, building a Onex out of an apartment garage! Am I in way over my head and possibly stupid? Absolutely, but I figured now is the time to start building the damn thing while I have no spouse and I’m making good pay.

The tail kit finally arrives sometime next month. If I complete it and decide I enjoy the building thing, I’ll start buying it up one piece and subkit at a time.

Plans are for a 100HP Aerovee Turbo engine, MGL Explorer Lite for the EFIS, with the 2 Axis AP, and the mode S transponder. Flying this thing around the desert mountains, the extra turbocharger just feels like the right choice.

Really what I want out of this thing is a nice plane to take me to interesting places over the weekend with one or two nights change of clothes as the baggage. If you have any advice, tips, or sense to knock into me, feel free to reply! I’ll be needing all the help I can get, I’m sure.

Hey fakelouis, that’s awesome! They are easy airplanes to build. The hardest skill is perseverance.

Welcome to the forum, FakeLouis!

Welcome and you are not in over your head! Sonex is my second build and both the company and members here are responsive and helpful!

Welcome! One piece of advice is to set a goal to on it everyday or 5 days a week even a little bit. Keep on doing that and you’ll always be making progress.

Also finding the right tools that you like working with can make some tasks more enjoyable. And it’s a great time to justify buying them.

Welcome to the forums! You will have a blast building your Onex, and you made a great choice! I was 28 when I started building my Waiex and loved it!
Keep things organized in your workshop and try to do a little each day to stay focused, and mostly, enjoy the journey!
