Very Sad. My condolences to family and others who knew him.

Looks like power line wire (gear leg) and insulators (ground)

Very sad, and my condolences to the family and friends.

The audio is on LiveATC. Two transmissions were chilling.

‘I’m not climbing’ and ‘I’ve got a sick engine. I don’t know if I can make the field’

Hi Robbie,

I first looked here and drew that as a conclusion:
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N935EK

Question: For future reference, how can I access ATC communications for a particular flight?

Thanks,

Wes

Here is an article about the builder/pilot. Met him once. Wish I know him better.

LiveATC has a lot of audio feeds. Not every frequency.

On the left side look for Audio archives. Choose the date. Remember the time stamps are Zulu, so you have to know what time you are looking for an do the math. Click “Select a feed” and look for the source. In this case I knew it was a towered field and was in their list.

Hi all,
Thanks robbie for posting, i’ll add a little more info.

look for atc archives on left .
airport is Fws
freq 124.625
date 19 dec
select feed scroll down KFWS twr/gnd
time 2030Z
submit
look for gray bar play recordings are for 30 min segments
shortly after it starts to play twr issues tpx code for sonex5EK.
let it play about 4 min of audio to listen to.
link above from waltb seems to indicate this was first flight
son forrest was watching and listening w handheld radio.
a true tragedy.
appears to have hit a wire, which flipped plane.
RIP.

I see others have told you how to find it - just note - LiveATC archives are only up for 30 days so if you want the audio for future reference - be sure to download it.

NOT to second guess the NTSB - but it look from this picture that the engine had stopped (prop tips intact) and he got unlucky on a power line which is across the gear with broken insulators in the foreground.
