Initially I had no air-oil separator. Later I bought one from amazon and modified it. It helps, but it’s really small and not perfect. With the additional power from my mods, we have been turning 3250 RPM in cruise and seeing 120 kts. But the extra RPM seems to sling more oil out the breather, protecting the belly from corrosion. So, I bought the one that Sonex sells. This would be easy to mount during construction. 4 holes with nutplates in the firewall, two of the up high in front of the tank, and you are set. So I came up with a scheme to mount aluminum extrusions to the motor mount with adel clamps, and mount the separator to them.
That’s how I originally installed the Rotax oil tank and it worked well. I am sure the Rotax tank would be similar to the oil separator in size and weight.
I later had to relocate it to accommodate my cooling system mods and installed it on the firewall which wasn’t very difficult at all.
I might have to relocate it yet again because I am switching to the Ring mount, hoping I lucked out though and installed it out of the way
I modified it to make it lighter, and to make it work better. But it still didn’t seem that great, especially now that we are cruising at higher RPM. So I bought the Sonex one as shown in this thread. I just completed the installation, and I’ve added 0.6 lbs in the swap. I’ve calculated out that I can save about 0.4 lbs by replacing most of the rubber lines with aluminum.
