Hello — Newby here for the High Wing fun. I had a Van’s RV7A quickbuild once upon a time yet found that there was nothing quick about a quickbuild. Those rivets take four hands to buck at times. I only came with two. So now will see about pulling rivets it appears.
Anyone planning to attend the Arion Jabiru engine class over in Tennessee Feb 21 and 22?
Welcome, airspeed. I’ve had the Highwing tail kit for about 2 weeks and its almost done. Overall, it goes together fast and fun. The rudder and elevators being the exception, I’d still consider those “slow-build.” The matched hole parts have lined up perfectly, it’s been enjoyable and rewarding work as visual progress develops very quickly. A couple of -B builders in our chapter did the Jabiru class and found it worthwhile. From what I understand Jabiru is supposed to be coming out with mechanical fuel injected version any time now and Edge Performance is coming out with an EFI and electronic ignition setup for the Jabiru. Have you heard any of the latest on those?
I’ve done a few Waiex control surfaces. I made up some tooling to make them slow -. The other Bryan and I were discussing 3D printed tools to make them medium build. I really like the control surface builds.
Hello Chris – I did look at your build site and it looks great to see it come together. This time I have a 36x40 shop to work in so just need to get some extra tools to pull rivets. I will have lots of questions for the crew at Arion on the Jabiru. I am wondering when the best time is to buy the engine. I am thinking early to not get price increases. Yet any warranty probably starts when and engine is delivered. More additions to the engine are going to raise the price tag closer to the ULpower probably.
That sounds like a great shop space. I’ll probably do a post on my build log with all the tools I used for the Tail Kit while I wait for the fuselage. I wouldnt go too early on engine or avionics, these engines dont seem to have much wait time compared to lycomings. The only thing I don’t like about the UL is the price, it will be interesting to see what the Edge and MFI Jabiru cost is. Look forward to watching your progress.
