Formation flying

Doing a bit of formation practice last Sunday. There will be a celebration of life for a good friend and life time member of the AFC (Abbotsford Flying Club) this Saturday Mach 14. We’ll do the missing man flight over the clubhouse weather permitting. It’s always an honor to do these.

The practice flight was done at 140 MPH indicated. Was a lot of fun leading the RV7a and Piel Emeraude.

Very nice Rene’! I hope the weather cooperates.

A VW powered Sonex pulling down 140 mph is a sure sign of someone who knows his engine!

That’s awesome. I’ve only ever seen the missing man from the ground.

Thanks Dan and Bryan.

My friend Bevan in his RV7A will do the pull up and away to the west with our friend’s jacket in the right seat. I’ve done the pull up twice at different events and it is quite emotional.
They’re expecting around 150 people at this celebration of life.

Awesome!

I used to fly a fair bit of formation with friends, and ironically my buddy with a Cessna 170 was the best match for my Sonex.

Very cool photos!

Thanks!

I’ve found another Sonex is my best match :upside_down_face: It’d be nice to have a few around to form a squadron.

I’ve only flown the Waiex in formation with a Luscombe. We droned along at a stately 70kts. I didn’t burn much gas!

Well we managed to get our pass in today. Weather was touch and go and definitely the bumpiest formation flight I’ve done, but the pass looked respectable from the ground. Here’s a shot after Bevan did the missing man pull up.
