Flying Young Eagles in my Sonex

Had a wonderful day as the weather in Carolina could not have been better.

My early morning flight to a grass field was so smooth it was almost scary! OATs in the mid 50s heading over to set up for another Young Eagles event (we strive for four a year).

During the morning event the temps were 65-75ºF and the winds were light. Perfect for flying young folks that had never flown in a small plane before.

Five planes were used but I was the only Sonex. The recently installed larger tires worked well on the turf although I have “bottom of the wing cleaning duty” set for Monday.

I was blessed to be able to fly the mayor’s teenage daughter. She seemed to enjoy the flight quite a bit as we flew the scheduled path out to the lakes and back coming over the town her father is the mayor of. Even greased the landing!

Anyone else use their Sonex for Young Eagles? FWIW … my take away line to all my passenger is; “scoot over!”

Dale, I have not yet but have considered it. I just need the engine to still be running like it is for next season…

I used to fly young eagles yearly in my previous airplane a Quickie Q2. Not yet in the Sonex.

I did fly 5 young Air Cadets last year in the Sonex. It was an event organized by one of the parents who was also a club member. It is always a very rewarding experience and a true delight to have the privilege to do this.
