Hello everybody, Im seriously considering sonex and Id like to try flying one, preferrably a sonex/waiex B with a turbo aerovee. What’s the best way to try one? I’m based in LVK and am willing to flying within the state
Thanks!

Its a shame the factory doesn’t do them, its one of the few things I find to dislike about the company. Sure, lawyers and insurance are what they are today but they dont need to offer it to just anyone, however, if you’re willing to buy a kit, you should be able to get a ride. Sure, they are out there but after flying in my area for 25 years and as a tailwheel CFI having experienced most airplanes out there with 103 different makes and models flown, I never had an opportunity to get a ride in one until recently. So its still pretty darn hard to find a ride in one. I found someone that was willing that i was confident in as well. I will say its like a racing go kart of the sky. Even more responsive on the controls than an RV and the controls load up at higher speeds. It flies with control pressure, not control movement. The ailerons and rudder are really nice and the elevator slightly more sensitive. It was a hoot to fly. Some of the biggest surprises were how stout it feels and that even with no interior panels, insulation, carpet etc its not overly loud, doesnt sound like an alumium can taxiing over concrete cracks and felt surprisingly refined. The -A model is a bit small for two 6 footers though. But now I can watch Sonex flying videos and better understand the feel and I now feel more confident to place my High Wing order. Check the EAA Chapters around you, thats what worked for me. Good luck!
Check the builder’s directory:
You can filter on distance from a location.
thanks will try, seems that sonex website is down now
The builders database is not up to date. You can also use the FAA registration database to find owners near you, but I did extensive outreach to owners near me, and was never able to secure a ride.
