My son and I just got back. Very windy and gusty today. Not sure if I screwed up, or if a gust knocked the flaps down, but I can report that an AeroVee powered Waiex can take off at 1135 lbs and full flaps. I figured it out after we had climbed 200’.

I really enjoy your posts, pictures and videos. Keep them coming

What rpm do you guys see on the take off roll?

Thanks Rene’! Typically 3100-3150 on the roll. With our old climb prop we would see 3300-3400 and that was great. But we are enjoying a 110-120 kt indicated cruise vs 100 kts on the old prop.

Very good. What are the pitch/diam numbers of the climb and now cruise props. Even with your new prop it looks like the two of you are off the ground quickly. Thanks

Ironically both props are Prince P tips, 54x44. But they are very different. The climb prop is a lot older. One other difference in the props is WOT 120 kts, 3700 for the climb prop before I chickened out due to RPM, vs 135 kts and 5590.

Our takeoff weight for that video was just under 1150 lbs. It’s a much different airplane solo!

How’s did your Waiex do in the wind this weekend? The video made it look like it wasn’t bad. Working on mine hearing the gusts outside I kept on wondering how it handle being smaller than anything else I’ve flown.

The Waiex is fine in the wind. I often wish for more rudder power in big crosswinds. Besides the rudder the rest of the controls are really powerful which is helpful when you are getting hammered on final. In Adam’s video you can see his reaction to a wing lift from a gust, seconds after the touchdown. Saturday was windier and I got picked up by a gust after the airplane was done flying the first time.

Hi Bryan,

We had forgotten that our flaps were full 30 degrees and yes the airplane will get off the runway but climbing was not happening. So now i always refer to the pre take off check list to avoid this again.

I’ve got the small flaps, and have hot rodded my AeroVee a bit, so I didn’t notice until we got to 200’ or so. I did notice a longer takeoff roll and from the 3 point attitude the initial pitch up was sportier than normal. Our checklist also has flap setting as a line item. I’m not sure how I screwed up.

Now we know how the performance will suffer for the flaps at that position… safe flying!
