Audio Alerts

Hello, I’m looking to see if theres a simple answer to something i’ve been wondering.

If i have multiple instruments that produce audio alerts, is it acceptable to wire them all into the audio input jack on my comm radio?

Ive got an Xcom 760 with an aux jack, and have a MicroAir T2000 with an alert output thats just loose. I’m putting plan together to install other instrumentation that will produce alerts, so it would help to know if its as simple as i think it is.

Thank, Martin

Martin,

I don’t think that will work. You need something to sum the voltages.

Gotcha. You think something like this could work?

I think it could. A summer with an op-amp circuit is probably the “better” mixer he talks about, but worth a try.

in The AeroElectric Connection book by Bob Nuckolls ( of B&C Specialty Products) has an Audio Systems chapter in it. In there he has a full schematic of an aviation homebuilder centric audio isolation amplifier system.

might be able to find old articles written by him in Sport Aviation or Kitplanes

this audio.pdf file is absolutely correct. I have uses things like this in other things, and sometimes, a 1 K 1/2 watt resistor inseries with each audio source, and co-connected to the output device amp, has worked for me. but I like this .pdf approach better as it is designed properly. Just ‘IMHO’, of course!!

I have used the simple resistor method in my bird for:

G3X

GNX375

CO detector

The key is each unit has to have a way of individually setting its volume, ie needs to output an amplified signal. In my case, it was then a matter of setting each units volume, CO detector (hopefully RARE audio) LOUD. GNX-375, mostly redundant audio outputs which I turned off in settings, LOW, and G3X, generates all the typical audio and alerts, MEDIUM.

Then there is no easy way to change the volumes in use, but the installation was very simple.
