AP set up

As I am moving to the forward fuselage, It’s time to plan for the installation of my pitch servo for the auto pilot. The first question is where to connect the servo to the control system. The idler, the control stick triangle, the trim tab, or a second dedicated trim tab.? I have a center stick.

Hello John,

I have my Trio roll AP servo mounted in the right side bay under the seat. I did have to lengthen the arm on the Gold servo as the original arm was a bit too short. Mine works very well but it’s only for lateral (roll) single axis control.

Here is a video showing the placement of MGL servos on a center stick:

As I’m certain you are aware, you must have it set up so that the control stops on the stick engage just before the end of travel on the servo. Also be very careful that no servo has the possibility of going “over center.” I know you are aware of these things but give that as a general warning to anyone installing an AP unit.

Dunno if this helps …

Hi John

I mounted my MGL pitch servo behind the rear spar. It’s working out really well.

Here’s a picture of the Dynon setup. It shows it fir the dual stick, but I believe there is a similar attach point on the center stick setup.

If you wanted something setup already the Dynon mounting kit could be an option as from the Sonex Flight Podcast it sounds like it would also work with other servo brands: SonexFlight Podcast: Episode 16 - “Autopilots” If you’re using a different brand make sure you check the servo arm length against the Dynon one.

Also of note, the Dynon autopilot kit is designed to work with the lower seat mod. When I played around with it I thought I might be able to get it to work with the normal seat but it would take some modifications to the bracket and flipping the servo around or something but decided to do the lower seat mod.
