Another Highwing - Project

Inventory done. One item listed as backordered is the SNX-T06-01 Elevator Horn. Everything else seems to be here. Time for the party to start. :slightly_smiling_face:

Very cool! I attempted an RV4 once upon a time. Finished the Waiex. They are good kits.

By the way, that is a classic leatherman you have there.

I guess the leatherman is just about as classic as me. It has been awhile since buying a new one. I keep finding the classics in a drawer, tool box, or under the seat of the truck.

Hello Crew – I need some other eyeballs to evaluate what the deal here. I’ve triple check and still does not jive. Page H04 of the Tail build on the horizontal stab spar. I cleco’d the parts to see fit before clean-up of parts. I believe that the main spar should be flush with one edge of the RH and LH spar channels. The punched holes do not let that happen from what I see. Any other input? Fairly sure I have the correct orientation. Wanting to catch myself if doing it wrong before talking to Sonex.

What happens if you flip that extrusion so the other surface is on the channel? Or make sure you don’t have L&R mixed up.

I will take another look however I expect that the unmatched angle would then be on the other side. The drawing orients the LH channel to the right of the drawing and RH channel to the left side. Aircraft forward is not designated so it seems to be “just lay it out like we tell you” arrangement with the part numbers. I sent off the email to Sonex. Prob won’t get feedback till next week.

Reviewed it some more and right now it looks like I got two SHX-H04-02R shipped and one of them is labeled SHX-H04-02L. They are not interchangeable.

Well that sucks, good that you figured it out though.

Is it just an illusion with the picture, or are the holes in the machined spar not centered down the “finger”. Looks to me like maybe the issue is with the spar, not the channel ??

Keep in mind your B-B section view is a view from the back looking forward, or are you sure you got two -02R? Just trying to think of all possibilities. If you cleco it together and take another picture of the entire spar from the front I think we could see what you mean better.

These are the two rear spar channels. They are punched exactly the same. The left hand one needs to have the top holes punched closer to the edge. Not the same as the right hand spar channel.

When the channels are placed end to end for the main spar attachment then the holes on this LH labeled channel are shifted to the wrong side. None of the Main Spar holes match since it is not a Left Hand spar channel. Regardless of the label. :man_shrugging:

If I rotated the LH channel 180 degrees you might see it better. Wonder if someone out there has two LH channels :slightly_smiling_face:

I think that is the light reflecting on the way the aluminum was brushed perhaps. The machined spar seems punched ok otherwise.

Just did quick test fit of mine and all lined up good. Added labels to make it easier to see which is which.

THX … yeah I cannot do that with the parts I currently have on hand. One side of the -02L has hand lettering and the other side has the part number stamp. Must have been some confusion. Will get is sorted out. Moving on to other parts for now.

Wellll…. That is a gut punch for Sonex and us dreamers. Sonex had a snow day closing post on FB back on March 16 and then no phone calls or emails were answered the week of the 23rd. I was looking forward to Monday the 30 when everyone might be back. I almost sent half the deposit for the fuselage and wings. Some of you probably did… Mark always had the positive outlook.

I jump between keep putting the tail together or box up and go back to shopping for something else. I still need the elevator horns and the replacement for a wrong stamped part.

Does EAA own any kit experimental plans? I think they at least have some STC for certain aircraft. That is different than a whole kit I guess, like all the Sonex models.

Tailwinds to all you out there flying :small_airplane: I’ll be looking for ways that I can!

Hello!

OK — Onward to create some hanger art :face_with_raised_eyebrow: … too soon?

I decided a plan for the mislabeled Horizontal Stab rear spar parts. In review I ended up with two SHX-04-02R even though one was labeled SHX-04-02L

The parts are mirror images of each other. Or rather they should be.

So I decided to lay them face to face and punch #40 holes into the other spar piece to get the hole pattern transferred for the mirror image.

The first set of holes do match. The larger section where there is a offset on the spar fixture is where I will drill the new holes.

Drill out these red lined holes.

Then I will be able to assemble the main rear spare fixture onto these pieces as was intended. I probably will just cleco that side into the skin then if the time came that I could get the real spar without extra holes it can be pulled out and rivet the new SHX-04-2L in place.

I do wonder if I can find 6160-T6 .032 in the needed spar profile as a “blank” then transfer the holes to that and bend and cut the other end. Would be golden at that point I think.

Does anyone know if this spar profile is something that could be stock at Online Metals? Part of stick build projects?
