I ran across this while cruising the internet. Looks like the best possible outcome. Wonder what happened.

Audio from the cockpit … very cool under pressure. Great Job!
Dale (et.al),
Does anybody know what the problem was?

Man, that IS a nice looking Onex. Glad it didn’t get damaged. I don’t recall seeing cowl cheeks on other Onex planes, but they really help the looks. I’m assuming VW power probably.

The camshaft thrust washer failed (a very rare instance), a piece of it jammed the cam gear to crank gear interface, causing the steel crank gear to saw off some aluminum cam gear teeth. Cam stopped rotating and the engine quit instantly. I was fortunate to have a good landing spot close by, uneventful landing on a two lane asphalt road out in sparsely populated area. Rolled through an intersection onto gravel road for the last 300 feet.
Engine completely disassembled and gone through by William Wynne - his concern and customer support are unparalleled. Back flying now. This event does not dampen my enthusiasm for the Corvair Flight Engine. Sometimes ‘stuff’ happens, and does happen, to multiple brands of aero engines. Learn, improve, move forward.

Well done Jeff!
Yes, very well done Jeff. Happy to hear you and your beautiful Onex are fine!
