Over Voltage Protection for the Jabiru Engine

Anyone who has read the Bob Nuckolls “AeroElectric Connection” Knows that Permanent Magnet Generators, like those on the Jabiru engine, need over voltage protection. Unfortunately, B&C Specialty Products no longer offers their device for Jabiru engines. (They told me that they are focused on legacy engines)

I discovered an Over Voltage Protection Device offered by Olsen Technologies. It is called the OTM-OVPD and lists for $129. I’m here to report that I have now installed this device into my electrical circuitry and successfully tested it - it worked perfectly. It comes with a test pushbutton that is useful for annual condition inspections.

Welcome to the forum Bill! Let us know how your overvoltage protection works out.

Welcome aboard! Thanks for this info as I currently (pun not intended) have the older style B&C OV unit on my Corvair powered plane using a 20 amp PM dyno.

The unit you show here would replace mine perfectly if needed. My thought is that all planes should have OV protection. I was convinced of this years ago when I viewed photos of a Jabiru regulator that caught fire (it was FWF) and nearly burnt through the firewall because the pilot either didn’t know, or had no way to shut down the alternator.

Not much cost, not much weight, but a lot of safety …

Thanks for posting this!

I had one of the B & C new voltage regulators, and it took out my Jabiru 3300 alternator. To their credit, they refunded my money for the VR. (This is one reason they now state it is not intended for Jabiru’s)

I have been looking for a better over voltage protection circuit. Much appreciated.

Interesting B&C stopped making them. In February I bought a B&C overvoltage kit for upto 30A PM alternators that also included the relay for my Rotax install but it looks like they’re no longer making it. Good to know that there’s an option to replace the OV component it if it dies.
